The Red Wings will soon be moving out of its 34 year old arena and in to a new state of the art 650 million dollar arena. The Joe Louis Arena was built in a better time in Detroit back in 1979 shortly after its completion the Red Wings moved in to the Joe. This new Arena has not been named yet only initial plans are being released but it will be completed by the 2016-2017 Red Wings Season. The cost of the arena is 450 million dollars with another 200 million being spent to make the area around the arena more walkable and maybe for a few stores. The New arena’s location is with in walking distance of Ford Field and Comerica Park. With Detroit’s 3 arena’s with in walking distance this is sure to bring new tourism and walkability to Downtown. $365 Million of this project would be funded by private investment and $280 Million will be funded by public investment. The arena will seat 18,000 people down from the Joe’s capacity of 20,066. The investments to Downtown Detroit will be massive and will add alot of urban density to this area including retail stores and new living spaces including lofts and apartments. Now the next question is when will the Pistons move to Downtown Detroit?

Warning: Full spoilers for the movie follow.

“Man of Steel” tells the genesis story of Superman, the essential archetype of superheroes. The Man of Steel’s (Henry Cavill) escape from Krypton, however, is accompanied by a new twist to the classic tale: Superman must defend the Codex, the database of every Kryptonian that will ever live, from the evil General Zod, who’s out to restore the glory of Krypton by wiping out planet Earth.

The action in this film was promising, yes, but at the same time it didn’t know when to quit; throughout the film, the action dragged on, seemingly with no visible end in sight. The opening sequence on Krypton took about fifteen minutes. Additionally, none of the action or special effects were particularly groundbreaking or exciting; it’s the same old effects, just rehashed for different movie.

Most of the acting in the film was ho-hum, to say the least. General Zod (Michael Shannon) never proved to be a truly imposing villain; the whole time, it just felt like he was walking around commanding people without any essence of what makes a villain. But that’s not to say that Henry Cavill’s performance as Superman was any better. No, Cavill wasn’t the right fit when it came to portraying the squeaky clean superhero, and his attempts to do so seemed awkward and out of place.

The two actors in the film who deserve praise, however, are Amy Adams as Lois Lane and Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent. Adams brought out the true spirit to Lois, one that’s tough, ambitious, and willing to stray from the rules. Meanwhile, Costner as Jonathan Kent provided us with not only the best scene in the film (one where Kent reveals that Clark is an alien from another planet), but the best performance in the film as well. If there’s one positive thing to say about this film, it’s Kevin Costner’s performance.

Emotionally, this film was about as dry as it gets. The film promises action, and action we get. But where’s the emotional tension during all of it? If there’s any to be found, it’s in the few scenes between Jonathan Kent and a young Clark Kent. Those few scenes were the only poignant moments in the whole film, and it was nowhere near enough to even out the action that takes up the majority of the film.

In short, the only thing that this film has riding for it is the fact that it’s a Superman film. It’s hyped up to the point that its success is essentially guaranteed, but just because a movie is successful doesn’t mean that it’s a good movie. And this is not a good movie.

Rating: 5.5/10

See It or Skip It?: Skip it. Dull action, lack of emotional tension, and an overall lackluster cast make for an overhyped movie that isn’t worth your money.

Today marked the kick off for the Electronic Entertainment Expo, which is more popularly known as E3. This three-day convention takes place every year and acts as the stage for the major video game publishers to unveil their new games and consoles. Undoubtedly the biggest gaming event of the year, E3 has since been live streamed all over the internet each year, with its audience growing with each and every broadcast. This year proves to be no different; if anything, the competition has only heated up between the show’s three major showcasers: Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft. The former has a lot on its hands when it comes to its latest console, the Wii U, whilst Sony and Microsoft battle heads over their new consoles, the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One, respectively. Here’s what each of the three gaming giants had to share at E3:

Microsoft: Microsoft opened its presentation with a look at one of its new exclusive games, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. After that, the presentation switched focus to its existing console, the Xbox 360. A minute was given to introduce a new, smaller model of the 360 that’s rolling out into stores “today.”

After that, the main topic switched back to the company’s newest console, the Xbox One. Let me rephrase that: the main topic switched to the games of the Xbox One. A potpourri of new games, most of which were exclusives, were unveiled for the crowd, including, but not limited to, sequels to hit franchises such as DeadRising, Battlefield, and Halo. Besides those, however, were the original games that were unveiled. Sunset Overdrive, Ryse: Son of Rome, and Respawn Entertainment’s Titanfall were all new, original games that were showcased.

What’s interesting is that not every single one of these games are shoot-em-up’s that have been popular as of late. No, new games like Project: Spark, Crimson Dragon, and others focused more on the creative aspect of what games have the power to do.

After the games came the features of the new console itself. Overhauls from the 360 involved a limitless friends list, the dropping of Microsoft Points in favor of real currency, and the ability to stream your gaming experience to Twitch via Kinect, using its audio and video capabilities to upload videos to the Cloud and to social media sites.

At the end of the presentation came the date and price for the Xbox One. The console is set to launch in November with a hefty price tag of $499. The pricing has since received a lot of ridicule on websites such as Reddit, whose gaming section is ablaze with rants over the pricing of the Xbox One. But whether the Xbox One can trump Sony’s PlayStation 4 wasn’t found until later Monday night, at Sony’s press briefing…

Sony: Much like Microsoft, Sony opened their presentation with a quick look at what’s coming to their consoles that are already available on the market, the PlayStation Vita and the PlayStation 3. Not a whole lot was shown for the Vita, but there were some PS3 exclusives were shown, such as The Last Of Us.

After that came the unveiling of Sony’s new console, the PlayStation 4. The console itself was announced back in February, but Sony’s E3 conference marked the first time that the console was seen.

But perhaps the real excitement came when the console’s new games were unveiled. Original games that were shown include The Order: 1886, a steampunk-esque third person shooter, and The Dark Sorcerer, a parody spin on the RPG genre that, given the trailer, may not even look like a game. But of all of the exclusives, Watch Dogs looked to be the most promising aesthetically.

Besides the originals were the entries to the existing franchises that made an appearance. Infamous: Second Son, Killzone, and Drive Club all made appearances on the new console. The response to these games were a bit tepid, at least compared to Microsoft’s showings. Third party games were also shown, with surprises such as Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III being unveiled.

If the fanfare was missing for the new games, it sure came about when Jack Trenton started talking about the console itself. In what was obviously a move against the Xbox One, Trenton announced that the PlayStation 4 would fully support used games and offline play, something that the Xbox One had placed restrictions on. The crowd started to go wild, and chants of “Sony! Sony!” could be heard, even after PlayStation Plus, Sony’s premium service, was announced to be required for online play.

But then came the price point for PlayStation 4. $399. This is obviously a counter-defense against the Xbox One (which will be launching at $499), and everyone there at the presentation knows it, judging by their reaction. Sony’s rebuttal is clearly with malice against Microsoft, given that they uploaded a step by step video on how to share used games:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWSIFh8ICaA
YouTube

Nintendo:

Unlike Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo opted for a live stream to showcase their new products. First to be shown were the new Pokémon games, X and Y. Aside from being 3D, Nintendo is adding Fairy type Pokémon to these games, along with a program to interact with your Pokémon. Next, Super Mario 3D World is shown, a brand new game coming for Wii U. Similar to the first installment of this series, Super Mario 3D Land, this game is multiplayer and will feature a ‘Cat Mario’ power-up. Remember that really cool racing game that has all the Mario characters in it? Exactly, who doesn’t remember! Mario Kart! Nintendo also showed the 8th installment of the Mario Kart series, appropriately named Mario Kart 8. In this game, Nintendo is bring back some features from previous Mario Kart titles, like gliding in air, racing underwater, and riding motorcycles. The racing courses are also in 3D, and in some parts you can race upside down. Next, we see Nintendo’s Wii Party U, which features regular stand up board games, and multiple new mini games, along with being multiplayer. Nintendo then shows it’s 3rd Party releases, including: Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, Batman: Arkham Origins and Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate, Deus X: Human Revolution, Disney Infinity, Just Dance 2014, Rayman Legends, Scribblenauts Unmasked, Disney’s Planes, Shin Megami Tensei IV, Skylanders SWAP Force, and more. The Nintendo EShop will also have many new games, including: Ballpoint Universe, Cloudberry Kingdom, Coaster Crazy Deluxe, and many more. Next, Nintendo showed more information about their new game, Wind Waker Wii U. This game is a remake of the 2003 Wind Waker for Nintendo Gamecube, with enhanced 1080p HD graphics, a new game feature with the character Tingle, and retells the epic story of the original that many Zelda fans love. Next we see a new game, The Wonderful 101, an action superhero game. Who doesn’t love the huge gorilla that wears a tie? Yep, Donkey Kong! The new game, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was announced for the first time in the conference. The New Bayonetta 2 was shown again, but with little information. A great Storyline and graphic style is promised. Monolith Soft was announced, a very interesting futuristic exploring game. Finally, the New Super Smash Bros. was shown, the 4th installment of the Super Smash Bros. Series. This game will be for Wii U and 3DS, and includes many new characters like Mega Man and the trainer from Wii Fit. Information on other games, Mario and Luigi: Dream Team and Pikmin, will be announced later. Nintendo Fans were well satisfied after seeing Nintendo’s Plans for the new games, and will be waiting in excitement until they are released.

“In aggregate, studies consistently demonstrate a rate of diagnostic error that ranges from <5% in the perceptual specialties (pathology, radiology, dermatology) up to 10% to 15% in most other fields” according to the scientific article ”Overconfidence as a Cause of Diagnostic Error in Medicine” by Berner and Graber.

Studies comparing autopsies and diagnoses have been far and few. In 1983 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine , Dr. Goldman published a comparison of misdiagnoses in a single Boston institute during 1960,1970, and 1980 and similar study in Germany done about ten years later had the same results. Misdiagnosis statistics remained relatively unchanged.

The health care systems in Germany and the United States are very different, so the health care system serves as only part of the problem. Germany has 99.8% of its citizens and legal residents covered with about 88% employee-employer based whereas the United States over 82% of those under 65 and 100% over 65 with 54% employer-employee based and 46% government funded. Despite the improving technology, Berner and Graber cite doctors’ negligence as a cause, with only 30% of patients’ questions being looked into (Gorman PN, Helfand M). Doctors are becoming too dependent on computer documentation instead of interacting personally with their patients. A recent study at Johns Hopkins Hospital showed that hospital interns spend over 42% at the computer compared to the 12% with the patients. A second study should be continued to see if these interns carry these potential habits into their medical practice.

While doctors’ overconfidence can be a possible cause, it should be noted that the United States spends 15.3% of its GDP whereas Germany spends 10.7% , Great Britain spends 8.9%, and Netherlands spends 9.2% and also have higher life expectancies. The United States no longer measures rate of autopsies and so too many have more confidence in this system where more time is spent with the computer than the patient and that time is divided among doctors, physician assistants, interns, and nurses, contributing to misdiagnosis and even if correctly diagnosed, mistreatment.

Apples keynote above:

Apple is known for its flashy devices and fancy unique operating systems but IOS 7 the new update for Ipod, Iphone, and Ipad is creating a lot of buzz. Several new features will be rolled out this fall when the operating system comes out including a new voice for the popular SIRI personal assistant. Also being developed in this new software are the icons on your home screen with a newer sleeker look to them. This also includes updates to safari, the camera, and all apps. Apps will now automatically update without having to push a button. The most exciting of the features is the new control center. Control center acts like a mini setting menu that you can make minor tweeks to your phone such as control brightness without having to leave what you are currently doing. This new update also boasts a new 3D update that gives your phone more depth to make it look as if its 3D. This update is free to anyone who has the iphone 4s or 5 and ipad 3,or 4. So in a way this is like getting a new phone for free. This will completely re-design the entire phone. Siri’s voice has been changed also to make her sound less of a robot and more human. Apple also unveiled its new music pairing app that works just like Pandora. Also from the automobile perspective you will know be able to integrate your phone into your car starting with the 2014 models of BMW, Mercedes, Chevy and Honda. There will be a special interface to set your phone up with your car. Also multitasking has been completely re-vamped now you will be able to multitask without exiting all of the apps at the bottom to save battery life. Apple has completely re-done everything for this new launch including video chat free face-time so you will be able to make calls for free without video using wi-fi. Apple is waiting until fall to launch Ios 7 because it will be then releasing the rumored iphone 5s or iphone 6 not sure of the name yet. Apple released all of this info to its shareholders around the world today from its headquarters in Cupertino, CA. Ios 7 is the future of mobile phones and will have a lasting impact at least until Ios 8 comes out.

Volunteer work is a great way to do this. Volunteer work also looks great on a college application. It is a way to help out the people in your community. There is no better feeling than knowing that you are spending your time assisting those who need it. For Divine Child High School students, the volunteer work you do over the summer can be used as Christian Service hours for the up coming school year. Here in Dearborn there are many opportunities for volunteer work.

One common and fun volunteer job is working at an animal shelter. Inside the shelter there are many tasks you get to preform as a worker. If you care working with the animals, you could have the opportunity to walk the dogs, cuddle with the cats, or help the animals socialize. As a volunteer worker, you can also do work off-site at adoption events. This would include transporting the animals and supplies to and from the event. If you are not interested in working at the shelter but you would like to help the animals, you can volunteer to foster one or more animals in your home until they are ready to be adopted.

Another job you can volunteer for is working at a soup kitchen. There are a lot of high school students that enjoy working at soup kitchens to help out the community. While you are at the soup kitchen you get to serve food to people who can’t afford to support themselves.

These are just a couple of the many ways you can stay active in your community through volunteering!

Yesterday, a shocking revelation regarding our internet privacy came to light. A government program named PRISM, as described in a top-secret presentation obtained by a joint investigation by the Washington Post and the Guardian, extract data from nine top internet companies about their users. These include pictures, audio, video, emails, and other documents, such as connection logs.

These nine companies are, in the order they joined, Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, PalTalk, YouTube, Skype, AOL, and Apple. The NSA and the FBI are the government organizations tapping into these services.

Despite the leaked presentation, the Guardian reports that “senior executives from the internet companies expressed surprise and shock and insisted that no direct access to servers had been offered to any government agency.”

According the Washington Post, “‘NSA reporting increasingly relies on PRISM’ as its leading source of raw material, accounting for nearly 1 in 7 intelligence reports.”

There is one safeguard, however. James R. Clapper, the Director of National Intelligence, issued a statement in response to the stories.

The Guardian and The Washington Post articles refer to collection of communications pursuant to Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. They contain numerous inaccuracies.

Section 702 is a provision of FISA that is designed to facilitate the acquisition of foreign intelligence information concerning non-U.S. persons located outside the United States. It cannot be used to intentionally target any U.S. citizen, any other U.S. person, or anyone located within the United States.

Activities authorized by Section 702 are subject to oversight by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, the Executive Branch, and Congress. They involve extensive procedures, specifically approved by the court, to ensure that only non-U.S. persons outside the U.S. are targeted, and that minimize the acquisition, retention and dissemination of incidentally acquired information about U.S. persons.

So, this data mining of our social tools can only be used on those from outside the US. Despite that fact, what makes this so unsettling is that recently, the NSA has been caught spying on another communication tool: phones.

Another top-secret document was leaked to the Guardian in the last few days. This document was an order by the FBI, on behalf of the NSA, to Verizon to hand over all “metadata” on customers, including “subscriber data, recipients, locations, times and durations of every call made during that period.”

However, this order asked for all “communications (i) between the United States and abroad; or (ii) wholly within the United States, including local telephone calls.” The document specifically stated that it did not want “metadata for communications wholly originating and terminating in foreign countries.”

The NSA is claiming that they are spying on the phone records of Americans, and specifically not foreigners, but when it comes to social media, they are only paying attention to foreigners.

Ever since Bush signed the PATRIOT Act, which allowed to government to monitor more records of Americans without a warrant, there have been more and more laws that have imposed on our privacy.

One might say, “I have nothing to hide, so it’s not so bad.” Well, with the passing of the National Defense Authorization Act, it may not matter. If you have ever called or interacted with a terrorist on social media, even a domestic terrorist, you may be able to be indefinitely detained for “associating” with a terrorist.

The point is that despite what you may or may not have done wrong, if the government really wants you out of the way for some reason, they can find something. And that is what makes these recent developments so alarming.

The method of fingerprinting of arrested people, a process that has helped the police for over a hundred years, may soon be replaced by a much more modern forensic technique, one that was just validated by our judiciaries.

This Monday, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that the police are allowed to continue collecting DNA of people that have been arrested.

Police are allowed to collect the DNA using a swab on the inside of the person’s cheek, called a buccal swab. According to Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler, this practice amounts to “the fingerprinting of the 21st century”.

This method is restricted to “serious cases” and must occur when officers “bring the suspect to the station to be detained in custody”.

While the police are allowed to take the swabs before you are charged, there are some restrictions. First, the swabbing only applies to violent case or burglary. In addition, the DNA samples cannot be run through CODIS unless the suspect has been arraigned; the sample is then destroyed if the suspect is not convicted.

This case, Maryland v. King, was in response to the arrest of Alonzo King, a 26-year old from Maryland who was arrested on assault charges in 2009. The arresting officers proceeded to use a buccal swab on King under Maryland’s DNA Collection Act, a bill similar to federal laws and laws in 27 other states that are designed to solve cold cases. The DNA was put into the federal CODIS (Combined DNA Index System) database, connecting him to an unsolved rape from 2003.

King was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of the rape. However, a Maryland court said that it was illegal for the officers to swab him without a warrant under the Fourth Amendment, ruling against the act. The court declared that King had “a sufficiently weighty and reasonable expectation of privacy against warrantless, suspicionless searches”.

The Supreme Court was sharply divided in its ruling. Three conservatives (Thomas, Alito, and Chief Justice Roberts), along with the usually-liberal Breyer and swing vote Kennedy ruled in favor, while liberals Ginsburg, Sotomayor, Kagan, and the usually-conservative and very outspoken Scalia dissented.

Scalia, who led the other justices in dissenting, went on to warn about the possible issues and potential future implications of the ruling. “This will solve some extra crimes, to be sure. But so would taking your DNA when you fly on an airplane – surely the TSA must know the ‘identity’ of the flying public. For that matter, so would taking your children’s DNA when they start public school.”

The justice continued by talking about past rulings of the Supreme Court. “Whenever this Court has allowed a suspicionless search, it has insisted upon a justifying motive apart from the investigation of crime.” This point, a reference to past cases, seems to damn the law.

Scalia continued with his concerns over the growing loss of privacy, especially the language regarding “serious cases”. In his scathing dissent, Scalia discusses how the restrictions of violent crimes will eventually be lifted and will affect the “nearly one-third of Americans [who] will be arrested for some offense by age 23.”

“Make no mistake about it: because of today’s decision, your DNA can be taken and entered into a national database if you are ever arrested, rightly or wrongly, and for whatever reason.”

An interesting thing to note is the positions of Scalia, who normally sides with the conservatives, and Breyer, who normally sides with the liberals when it comes to Fourth Amendment and privacy cases.

As pointed out by CATO.org, “Justice Scalia has been on the defendants’ side in every non-unanimous Fourth Amendment case – King (DNA-swabbing of arrestees), Bailey (detention incident to search), Jardines (dog-sniffing a home), and McNeely (warrantless blood draw of DUI suspect) – while Justice Breyer has been on the prosecutors’ side in each of those cases.”

This case was dubbed by Justice Alito as one of the most important criminal-procedure cases of the decade. Only time will tell if the precautions laid out by Scalia were prophecies or just unfounded.

As we hold the state championship trophy over our heads, I think I speak for everyone when I say we felt so appreciative. The state championship trophy is not made up only of our hard work, but our support for our team and also the coaching as well. During the season, we would meet outside on the track after school to run our warmup and fear the workout that was to come, but with each other we all got through it with smiles, fun and laughter. When states came it was a relief that we trained so hard because now we were more prepared than anyone. With all of the 14 state qualifiers from our team, 12 placed in the top 8 getting an all state title, and we won the state championship title with 81 points, second place was behind us with 53 points. This state championship was not just made of our hard work though, it was made of our support for each other. Telling each other not to be nervous before races, cheering each other on during the races, and congratulating each other after the races no matter what happened. Lastly, the coaches were unbelievable throughout the season, putting up with our complaining, but still keeping us focused. Thank you to my team, my coaches, and I can’t wait for next year!
